Sony Motion Control Patent Scans Objects

Forget about the Wii Wheel. In the future of video games, a car could be controlled with a dinner plate, Frisbee or other round object, at least if Sony’s latest motion control patent gets made. The company has patented camera technology that scans real world items and incorporates them into play. In one example, the U-shaped object seen above acts as a virtual lightsaber, extending or retracting its blade based on its orientation in space. The idea is a little less Wii-esque and more like Microsoft’s Project Natal, which tracks human motion with no objects at all. Still, there’s something to be said for buttons, so I’m not counting out the prototype motion controller Sony showed at E3. [SiliconEra via Engadget]
