Rainmakers and Branding
Rain- seems like that’s what we got for the majority summer! When did New York and Seattle trade places and I had no clue?
Being that rain was the lead topic of discussion for most of us of us in this part of the States at the beginning of the summer, it does bring to mind a lesson on Branding I learned from one Dr. Ben Mack which he did last year.
In this and ensuing articles I am going to attempt to cover the major partsof the presentationwhich included: 1) How to make lightning Strike, 2) How to keep the lightning striking and 3) How to Bottle your Lightning.
In case your not acquainted who Bejamin Mack is, he is one of the foremost powers that be on Branding currently in the USA. He is considered legendary in certain Ad agency circles for this work. Over the years Ben has worked at some of the most recognized advertizing agencies aorund and held position of Vice President for Brand strategy for a very large corporation.
Basically, what that means was he was head strategist in charge of a ” billion dollar account (that’s correct, I said ” billion or 500 million smakers)! Do you think he knows what he is talking about? I do, and not only has he performed magic for the many businesses he has beem employed at, he is also a professional magician who at the age of 19 was the youngest recipient of the Award of Merit given by the magic castle.
For those unfamiliar with what a rainmaker is, a rainmaker is someone indian shaman not withstanding who instead of bringing a good harvest for his people brings increased revenue to his business by the use of his or her political associations, ability to attract customer therfore making the people he works for happy.
The essential obligation as a marketer is to “up sell” folks understanding of reality. In Benjamin Macks book entitled “Think Two Products Ahead” he elaborates on the whole concept of how practical branding can only happen when businesses (large or small) think two products ahead instead of the current time frame and for these companies to put together thriving affiliations with their client or customers through their Brand. The piece in the book where Ben Mack discusses the process of developing your Legend Platform is absolutely priceless!
Your “Brand” (the one called YOU!) is built around the concept of a “legend” or that is told over and over again and somewhere down the road get stronger with time. These tales are acceptable to be conflicting to each other. So, if you had to choose what type of story you would use to make your business sparkle like a diamond (you are reading articles like these to do so correct?) why not have them be legends. How else will you become “Legendary” in your chosen field without them?
Look out for the next article in the “Rainmaker and Branding” series coming soon to a blog, e-zine or website near you!
