Love It Or Leaf It: Tree-centric Santiago Home

Built on a lot located in the east side of Santiago, this contemporary Chilean home was completed last year and built amongst old-growth trees in a neighborhood the owners have lived in for nearly 30 years. Designed by architects at 57 Studio, the new concrete and steel Fray Leon house was built around an ‘H’ formation, which mimics the floor plan of the home it replaced and prevents any disruption of the existing landscape. The interior of the home is aligned to a series of trees. The center wraps around a native tree, a Cryptocaria alba, while the north side opens towards a massive avocado tree; a south wing reveals a macrocarpa cypress and the westernmost wing looks out upon an ashleaf maple.
