Churchill Downs To Host 3-Day Music Festival

The home of the Kentucky Derby is trading in race horses for rock stars. Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY will host HullabaLOU next year, a three-day music festival between July 23-25 that features 65 acts stretched across 147-acres on 5 stages playing everything from classic rock to country to adult contemporary; Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney and the Dave Matthews Band will headline the inaugural event.
The HullabaLOU Music Festival is part of a venture by a new subsidiary of Churchill Downs Inc. that was created to develop Churchill Downs into an industry leader in live entertainment.
“Our goal … will be to make this music festival to the music festival business what the Kentucky Derby is to horse racing,” said Steve Sexton, president of Churchill Downs Entertainment Group.
Sexton said he would be pleased if the festival could draw up to 30,000 people a day. If there’s a great big deal of hullabaloo about the HullabaLOU then the festival might become an annual event.
“With Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, and Dave Matthews Band as headliners, we have an extraordinary lineup of musical artists who will be performing against the backdrop of the iconic Twin Spires at Churchill Downs,” said Sexton.
“We believe that fantastic combination will offer a one-of-a-kind experience for music fans, and we anticipate that the HullabaLOU Music Festival will become the premier music festival in this region, and an important summer destination for music lovers for years to come.”
First opened in 1875, Churchill Downs has already had a taste of the big, music event by hosting concerts from the Rolling Stones in 2006 and The Police in ’07.
Ticket packages will range from $60 for a one-day general admission pass to $975 for a three-day VIP package. Tickets will go on sale Dec. 4 at noon through Ticketmaster and the event’s website, www.hullabaloufest.com.
Other artists confirmed for the festival include Black Crowes, Gladys Knight, The Doobie Brothers, Al Green and B-52s. A complete list of performers is available here.
