Thoracic herniated disc surgery is indicated in only rare instances when a herniated disc leads to myelopathy (spinal cord dysfunction), progressive neurologic deficits, or intolerable pain. Typically, these symptoms occur following an acute traumatic herniated disc with myelopathy.
